Presentation / Graphic

The presentation and graphics for Nelson Nugget’s adventure will be mostly completed this week as it is mostly just playing with the animations to make sure that they run properly and function well to suit the games needs.

Making the animation change from running to jumping was a big challenge because of how in the tutorials using the movement animation was done on a side scroller game instead of a platformer. So, modifying the eight-way movement program into one that is suitable for platformer game while also separating their jumping movement so that it can use a different animation from the running was a big challenge. It is not working perfectly as the animation repeats instead of playing once per jump. Hopefully through further research and tweaking this issue can be resolved. And from there a separate jumping animation for when the hamburger double jump can be used, to visually distinguish the change in lift.

The next element added was the death animation. This was added pretty easily as the animation just need to be triggered as soon as the character died. But it has brought up another concept for a specific regeneration animation for when the level is restarted, this could possibly be shown through nelson flashing as that is a universal videogame regeneration animation, or having him walk out from the side of the screen.

Another triggered animation is used for when the player reaches the sweet and sour sauce in the end. It depicts Nelson jumping into the sauce packet and some drops of sauce flying out. After this an image of congratulations, showing the players score comes up. This is interactive as the player can choose to see all high scores, go back to main menu or restart the level.

When others tested the game the same clear issue of the jumping animation was brought up. Although this has not been resolved yet, the issue being so clear to testers reinforces the importance of fixing this. Besides this problem all the other changes in the animation were a welcomed change, players remarked that it made the game feel far more polished.
